The Montessori Method of Education |
Dr. Maria Montessori was bon in Italy in 1870 and became the first woman doctor in her country's history. She was one of the most influential pioneers in early childhood education, which combines a philosophy with a practical approach based on the central idea of freedom for the child within a carefully planned & structured environment. The great pioneering achievement of Dr. Montessori was to recognize the crucial importance of a child's first six years of development. It is during this time that a child's power of absorption is highest and lifelong attitudes and patterns of learning are firmly formed. The child needs adults to expose him to the possibilities of his life, but the child must determine his response to these possibilities.

The main premises of Montessori education are: 1) Children are to be respected as different from adults and as individuals who differ from each other. 2) The child possesses an unusual sensitivity and intellectual ability to absorb and learn from his environment that are unlike those of the adult both in quality and capacity. 3) The most important years of a child's growth are the first six, when unconscious learning is gradually brought to the conscious level. The child has a deep love and need for purposeful work. He works, however, not as an adult for completion of a job, but the sake of an activity itself. It is this activity that enables him to accomplish his most important goal: the development of himself- his mental, physical and psychological powers. Dr. Maria Montessori died in Holland in 1952 at the age it 82. She left the world a wonderful legacy: a philosophy of life, a unique method of education, materials with which to educate, and a system of training that is capable of producing teaches who give children the best possible foundation of life.
